What do we do on campus and in the community?
CMU IJM at the 2011 Global Prayer Gathering in Washington, D.C.
"Raise Your Voice" Benefit Concert
The “Raise Your Voice” Benefit Concert was a collaborative Late Night event hosted by Amnesty International, CMU International Justice Mission, and CMU UNICEF. We featured the musical talent of our fellow CMU students, who “raised their voices” for victims of human trafficking who cannot speak for themselves.
Screened the documentary "NEFARIOUS: Merchant of Souls" | Nov 2012
We screened this documentary in UC McConomy to educate the CMU community about the global issue of human trafficking. We followed the documentary with a discussion and prayer.
The Justice Movement | Nov 2012
We called upon members of the campus to take a photograph with our "Seek Justice" plank and make it their Facebook profile picture. This was to raise awareness about human trafficking within various spheres of influence.
Sold Fair Trade Chocolates for Valentine's Day | Jan - Feb 2012
We sold fair trade chocolates to raise awareness about human trafficking on campus as well as to promote chocolate alternatives to chocolates that are produced by slave labor.
Screened the documentary "Sex + Money: The National Search for Human Worth" | Sept 2011
We partnered with a Pittsburgh human rights organization, Zonta Three Rivers North, to screen this documentary in McConomy Auditorium. We did this in an effort to bring awareness to ourselves and others about the sex trafficking of minors in the United States. After the documentary, a panel fielded audience questions. Those on the panel were: a man who has worked for 20 years in the Pittsburgh FBI on trafficking cases, a representative from the Pittsburgh-based Project to End Human Trafficking, and Carnegie Mellon's own Jessica Dickinson Goodman, who has been instrumental in working to end sex trafficking in massage parlors in Pittsburgh through local legislation.
JustiShoes | Spring 2011 - Present
We sold customizable flip-flops and tote bags on campus and at Midway Marketplace during CMU's annual Carnival event to raise money for IJM. We continue to sell these on campus when the weather is nice. :)
IJM's Annual Global Prayer Gathering | April 2011
As a chapter, we attended IJM's annual Global Prayer Gathering event in Washington, D.C. Over three days, we got to hear leaders from IJM speak, participate in worship, and meet many IJM workers. The GPG event is the only time of the year that IJM caseworkers are in the United States. While there, we got to learn about the specific challenges facing each of the IJM teams in all 13 countries and pray for God to meet these specific needs.
Letter writing to Pittsburgh Council Members | April 2011
We wrote letters to city council members in support of the Massage Parlor Regulation Ordinance in Pittsburgh. This ordinance was designed to regulate massage parlors (many of which traffic young women to sell sex) and allow law enforcement an in-route to investigate cases of trafficking.
Screened the feature film, "Amazing Grace" | Feb 2011
We screened this movie to hang out with each other as a group and learn more about the history of abolition. Attendance was open to all._
Screened the IJM documentary, "At the End of Slavery" | Oct 2010
We screened this documentary in the University Center to allow students an opportunity to be more aware about the status of the modern-day slave trade. After the documentary, we broke into groups and discussed our own perceptions of modern-day slavery and how the documentary changed or did not change these perceptions.
